Sick

This is Liam before they released him from the hospital Wednesday afternoon... over the worst of it, but obviously mad to be there! He had an overnight stay due to a nasty bout of RSV, but is feeling much better now. For more details, keep reading below the photo.

Here's the whole story:

We cut our long weekend in Seattle (more about that in a later post) short since the Liam guy clearly wasn't feeling like himself. Tuesday morning he was still coughing away and all kinds of congested, so we took him in to the pediatrician yet again (it's at least a weekly jaunt lately). Good thing both Shawn and I had decided to go this time, because Liam and I ended up leaving in an ambulance since his oxygen saturation levels were low enough to mandate immediate hospital transfer.

Once there, they hooked him up with some oxygen, got an IV going (after four attempts on the hands and one in the foot... awful!), and confirmed he has RSV. Just a bad head cold for us big people, but can be more serious for some little ones since their respiratory passages are so small. Between the repeated poking, the lack of sleep, and difficulty breathing, Liam was not a happy guy. I spent a looong night with him in the hospital while Shawn went home to tend to the pets. Luckily, Liam's O2 levels didn't drop any further while asleep (as feared) and he was drinking small amounts by Wednesday morning. After his chest x-rays came back clear, they released us that afternoon and we came home for the best naps ever!

Since then, Liam is making rapid progress towards his normal self. Still a croupy cough and plenty of goo, but he has his appetite again and is back to crawling around getting into stuff. The pediatrician cleared him for normal activity at the follow-up appointment this morning, so he headed to physical therapy as scheduled this afternoon. If all continues to go well, he's okayed to return to daycare Monday.

Now I hope the poor babe can catch a break! He has had infections in both ears for the past month, and has gone through three different courses of antibiotics at home plus the intravenous version they administered in the hospital. They're looking better today, but still not cleared. We are all tired of being sick (everything Liam gets, we get eventually, too), and just want our little guy to be able to enjoy a week without pain, medication, or a doctor's visit. Between the miserable colicky first couple months of his life, the developmental delays, and the repeated illness, I think Liam is due for some better luck for a bit!! Right now we're just glad to have him home and smiling again and we're looking forward to the weekend together :0)

We are so sorry to hear about Liam. I don't know what it is with this year, but we know A LOT of people who have been to the hospital this year. Doug had appendicitis, another friend was hospitalized with bronchitis. I think that you need to come home where it isn't so wet all the time! As soon as baseball is over, we will plan on a weekend in Albuquerque and take the kids to the zoo!

Oh, my gosh! So sorry to hear that Liam hasn't been feeling well! Sounds like he's been quite the little trooper, though! (And as miserable as I'm sure he was, he sure was cute pouting the hospital crib!)
Here's to a quiet, well-rested, uneventful weekend and subsequent week!
Take care, The Franklins

Poor Liam. I think he needs he needs a visit from his Grandpa! We are really looking forward to May. It is hard keeping Grandma away. Liam didn't look real happy with his H hospital stay. Was it the food? Grandpa K

Sorry to hear about the stay in the hospital. I didn't realize that he had trouble with the croup and ear problems. Has anyone mentioned to you about a alergy to milk products??? Just a thought since we have had that in the family. So much medicine for a little guy. He sure didn't look happy. Going to the Doctor's office is a good place to get sick if you aren't already. Hope things start to go better for you guys, and hope that Mommy and Daddy don't get sick. A scary experience I am sure. BB

We're so sorry to hear that Liam was feeling so under the weather and had to go through all that not-so-fun stuff. We're SO glad to hear he (and you all) are doing better and wish you only the best from here on out. We can't wait to see all you guys soon and hope you have a relaxing weekend.
P.S. He is still darn cute even when he's mad! :)

Wow, this is terrible! Was this at Emanuel? You know I work there? I float to the Pediatric floor during RSV season and it is a miserable hospital stay for the babies. Last year, my whole family was sick with the flu the entire month of Feb! I was 26 weeks pregnant and puking and dog sick! My kids have been sick too.

Yep, this was Emanuel, Becky! I didn't realize that was the hospital where you worked... what a long drive with a screaming baby!! And at least your family seems to be staying healthier so far this year - hope it continues.
